This is super cool!!! I just wish someone would run the math on a more contemporary data set. Its pretty obvious that the automakers were the primary source of revenue 25 years ago… and they carried most of the country.
Today, I would assume things are vastly different. It would be really cool for some math guru to rerun the data and create some new flow maps. Current data is at http://www.census.gov/govs/www/cffr03.html
My thanks to the GNU Desktop Mechanic!!! for bringing this to light.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackI was searching for this because I once saw a federal tax flow map that showed republican states were being milked to feed the excesses of the Northeast elite and California. Maybe things turn around during the Reagan years when congress went republican for the first time in 40 years. It’s no surprise that the states which once benefited from this are clamboring for the good old days. I wish there were more information on this. For example, only a few years ago Kerry, Kennedy and other in the northeast pushed though a bill (Clinton signed) which used federal funds for an oil reserve specifically for the northeast.
Now on the surface this sounds like a good idea, he talks about helping the elderly pay for fuel… But meanwhile in the midwest where it is MUCH colder, there were no such federal funds. Elderly and young couples with familys ended up paying huge heating bills. My brother paid $400/month to heat a well-insulated 3 bedroom house that winter, while Kerry, Soros and Kennedy benefited from the federal fuel reserve.

(As Ron knows, it gets to -25C in parts of the midwest nearly every winter. Such temperatures nearly destroyed a remote weather station I put together for the university.)
