I would have thought things would be better this time around. Nope, just different. Fortunately the hurriance did not hit the Houston or Galveston area. I saw this posting earlier today from a guy in TX.

I live NE of Houston—-left my house at 10:30 AM —traveled 2 1/2 hours due east on State 105—due to enforcement of mandatory evacuation order in my county—local and state law enforcement FORCED everyone onto the same route—-we traveled 22 miles in 2 1/2 hours—-there are numerous other avenues of egress from this area—they are all CLOSED—local and state law enforcement are blocking all routes except OFFICIAL evac routes—we turned around and came back home—-do the math—n gallons of fuel—no resupply available enroute—sitting in traffice — idling away all the fuel— fuel usage calculations become gals/hour at this point—-we calc’d that we would exhaust our fuel before reaching and clearing out of the congestion—a normally 40 minute drive would take 6 hours–this was comfirmed by phone from a friend who had been the route with long range tanks—-we know pleanty of backroads—alternate routes—-NOT ALLOWED to acccess them—

It makes me wonder if the govt is the Matrix, and its all talk and no go. I am very concerned. A few more screw ups like this, or a terrorist event, and who knows what may happen. I used to be very proud of our govt officials, but the more I see, the more I embarrassed I am. Is there no leadership anyplace anymore? Are our only true leaders, the ones who are so fed up with govt they will have nothing to do with it? When Walmart and Sam’s can get things taken care of in LA and MS without price gouging, and arrive days ahead of FEMA, what does that say?

When some brilliant idiot puts a level 4 Biosafety lab in Galveston, or worst yet, decides to put it in the poverty striken neighborhoods of Boston, it really makes me wonder. A BSL-4 handles the worst of the worst, unknown transmission, but probably airborne, and really deadly stuff. What are they thinking, putting such labs in hurricane zones, or worse, poor neighborhoods where folks would be unable to evacuate if something really bad were to happen. Afaik, there are only a few BSL-4 facilities. Galveston,TX Atlanta, GA somewhere around Bethesda,MD Hamilton, MT (in process), and Boston, MA (not sure).

As a friend from DC used to say. We have the highest quantity of PHD’s per square mile compared to any place else in the US. We also have the lowest percentage of people willing to be in public service than anywhere else in the US.

Either A, public service is so hosed its a lost cause and no one cares anymore, or B smart folks are too busy with the tasks at hand, eg getting things done, it only leaves idiots without leadership skills to be involved in politics.

The exception of course is the military. Time and time again, govt fails, yet a military commander often times will succeed. Even the guys with hosed up personal lives, still seem to be better at leadership than most of our govt officials.

This is a very sad time in the US.
