Well not quite free, someone has to pay, and its advertising supported. In a nutshell, you listen to a short ad, and they may play a fast one, and recommend a competitor who advertises with them rather than the one you ask for. I have yet to use it, but next time I need directory assitance, I’ll give it a shot. An short ad to save $3 sounds like a decent tradeoff, despite the fact I really hate ads.
