OpenProj | Projity

Yep, its a replacement for it, including the rather troublesome focus on time constraint scheduling, rather than resource constrained. Its been that way since I first used MS project roughly 15 years ago.

Realistically though, for many projects, that focus works pretty well. Ie, for building a house, doing a business changeover, or other tasks, its fairly easy to assign time durations, as either they constrained by other tasks, or are common enough, that realistic durations are possible. For new product development, its usual that many iterations may be needed, and durations of some tasks are anything but clear.

Granted, one can adjust MS-project, same as with OpenProj to deal with resource constrained scheduling…. but its a klugey thing to do. Open Workbench takes on resource constrained scheduling with ease… but it is not an easy program to use. The UI is more than dated, and the program has not seen updates since 2005. Thus, my search for a better tool continues.

In the mean time, I will give OpenProj a whirl, as it does have some features, my very dated version of MS-Project doesn’t have.
