Highway, Rail and Barge Routes to Yucca Mountain

Some interesting transportation plans, locations of metropolitan statistical areas, and truck, rail, and barge routes.

One of many issues to consider, is the capability of hazmat response teams along these paths. While its been a considerable number of years, since I was involve with this, my guess is that most of the focus has been more on terrorism, as contrasted with a transit situation… and years ago pre911, the capability of most areas to respond to a nuclear incident was exceedingly limted. Even during my time at Rocky Flats, rad concerns were more along the line of a paper trail, than the issues should an incident occur.

With significant quantities of material in transit, a whole other can of worms is opened…. and if the ducks aren’t in a row, this could end up being a real nightmare when something inevitably goes wrong. It might be interesting to run a business case analysis such as a PEST, as concerns the potential for hazard mitigation gear, both from a public safety, as well as a consumer point of view.
